If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them.

Vision:  Challenge Yourself!

Mission

The West Lyon English/Language Arts Department will serve its students by fostering their ability to:

*evaluate texts.

*communicate both in speaking and writing in order to find their voices as citizens.

*appreciate learning.

*thrive as individuals.

Philosophy

The West Lyon English/Language Arts Department builds student experiences based on several beliefs. The first is that literature should reflect a wide range of voices and perspectives that help students to build critical thinking and evaluation skills. Second, effective written and oral communication is a means for students to further themselves as individuals and to change their world. Third, choices which lead to authentic experiences foster an appreciation for learning because students gain interest and recognize relevance. Finally, it is the teacher’s responsibility to encourage behavior and choose curriculum that illustrates model citizenship, life-long learning, and appreciation of the human experience.
